A Broken System

As humans, we create things to have a purpose. We created a system to benefit us. A system with rules to abide by that prevents us from falling into utter chaos. However, there becomes a problem when a system is placed into an ever-changing society. When society changes, it only makes sense that not all of the old rules have taken into account the new changes. Some of these old rules are useless against these new changes. As both clash together, each trying to force justice in their own way, we fall victim to the very thing we created to help us: the system.

As a student, I question the school system. I question why I am labeled as a failure when I don’t fit into their definition of what it means to be a success. I question why parents feel the need to prevent their children from failing, rather than encourage them to try again when they fail. I question why the school system, created to prepare us for the real world, limits our success by protecting us from our failures. Because we are human, we’re not perfect. We learn from our mistakes. In the real world, we’re likely to come across failure time and time again. And in the face of failure, the only way to succeed is to try and try again until we can succeed. It’s been decades since the school system was made, yet we’re still using the same old system that limits us. But as Haruki Murakami has said, “The System did not make us: We made The System,” and if we made the system, we can change the system as well.
